The International Elderly Abuse Awareness Day, being celebrated today, was locally marked by the launching of a publication informing the various health professionals on ways how to notice and prevent abuse on elderly persons.
The Department for the Elderly and Community Care, together with the National Working Group On Elderly Abuse (NWGOE), launched a publication entitled “Abuse of the Older Person – See it, Prevent it, Stop It” during a conference which aimed at generating related awareness amongst the various health professions.
The publication defines Elderly Abuse and provides a profile of probable victims while providing information on how to tackle and prevent abuse.
While stating clearly that abuse of an older person is not excusable, society in general is reminded that everyone has an obligation to report any suspicion of abuse to the Police or Social Service Agencies.
Those needing further information can contact the Centru Servizz Anzjan on 2557 500.
