FALLS AWARENESS DAY 2010

The Parliamentary Secretariat for the Elderly and Community Care and the Falls Prevention Task Force are inviting the general public to attend a seminar related to Falls Awareness which will be held at the main foyer of Mater Dei Hospital on Wednesday 23rd June 2010.

Throughout the seminar various speakers will be highlighting the importance of avoiding falls while giving practical tips on the matter. Statistics show that one in every three people aged 65 years and over will experience a fall each year.

Although this is mostly attributed to a natural weakened muscle strenght, various other factors play a main role. In this respect, the Secretariat launched an informational booklet which informs the elderly about the various methods which can help reduce the chances of falls.

The booklet, which is currently being distributed in hospitals and all Government homes for the Elderly, will also be distributed during the same seminar.

Those attending will be shown related videos and given advice and tips by an interdisciplinary team.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care, Mario Galea encourages elderly persons to take good note of the tips given, as falls normally result in serious injuries, which might take a long time to heal. Although rehabilitation and care will help the elderly get back in best possible shape, sustaining such injuries normally requires rehabilitation, while also bringing about a new reality for the person concerned which might result in a changed lifestyle.

The seminar starts at 9.00 a.m.
